Mission Opportunities

Local Missions

Local missions is that element of FCO, International concerned with helping optometrists and other eye care workers witness effectively in the workplace and among associates and co-workers. For this purpose, vision-related gospel tracts, brochures, and other ministry tools have been developed and made available. A description and cost of these items can be obtained by emailing joesegree@gmail.com.

Logistical Support

FCO maintains a center for the logistical support of eye care missions, where ophthalmic instruments, equipment, and supplies are stored for use on the mission field. Monetary contributions to FCO eye care mission projects are welcome. For information about this area of ministry, contact Dr. Joe Claudy at Jmclaudy@embarqmail.com or at (317)535-9140.

MedSend Affiliation

FCO is an affiliate of MedSend. Graduating optometry students who wish to work full time in the Christian eye care mission field through FCO, but are hindered by student loans, can apply for help through MedSend. If approved, during the time when the health-care provider is working full time on the mission field, student loan payments will be paid for through a MedSend grant.

Eye Care Mission Projects

FCO is a resource of mission-minded optometrists, many of whom are able to participate in overseas eye care mission projects. There is no shortage of opportunities for optometrists to become involved in mission work. FCO frequently receives requests for people to go to foreign countries for this purpose, some for as little as a week and others for weeks or even months. One of the challenges for FCO is to help meet the tremendous need for optometric eyecare services around the world.

Going back to Kenya for the 10th time. Please consider joining this team as we will leave the USA/Canada on September 23, landing in Nairobi the evening of Sept. 24, 2017. Then we drive back to Nairobi and fly 1 hour west to Kisumu and conduct 3 more days of eye clinic. After we fly back to Nairobi and stay at nice hotel there, we do a safari trip to the Amboseli Game Park, staying overnight at a lodge in the park. Then on Oct. 6 we drive back to Nairobi in time for supper and late night flight out, getting back to USA on Oct. 7. Cost for the entire time in Kenya including flight to Kisumu and back, and the safari, all lodging and transportation, and all meals except 10 suppers we have together is $2,550. MISSIONS NEED — Optometrist/Ophthalmologist — Nicaragua — 3 Trips Summer 2017!    Posted: 2/8/2017

MOST (Mission Opportunities Short Term) Ministries has a need for Optometrists and/or Ophthalmologists for 3 trips to Nicaragua this summer!

MOST Ministries does a variety of professional and human care projects in partnership with their international church partners. They have been providing eyeglass clinics for almost 25+ years of ministry. The national church in Nicaragua they work with has needs for several eyeglass teams. MOST has groups ready to go but the Nicaraguan Health Administration requires they have a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist on each team. If you have a desire to go on a medical-missions trip and are looking for a way to take step in that direction, this would be a good opportunity for you!

These are 9 day missions trips to Nicaragua and they have 2 very generous donors who would be willing to offset a good portion of the cost of these trips for a licensed eye professional to go. Rather than the trips costing ($2200-2400 – including airfare), the cost of the trip would be $700-900. The cost of the trip is all inclusive (hotel, meals, insurance, etc.). The dates of the trips are:

June 16-24, 2017
June 24-July 1, 2017
August 4-12, 2017

You don’t have to be able to converse in Spanish. MOST provides translators for the 10-14 member teams and each team consists of a trained Team Leader.

If you are interested, please contact Debby Suchyta, Team Administrator at MOST Ministries. She can be reached at:

Office: (734) 994-7909, ext 2

      Ongoing Mission Projects

Looking for Groups Taking Mission Trips That Are Interested in Providing Reconditioned & Recycled Eyeglasses to the People in the Countries Being Visited

Operation Eye Care, a program of the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation in Decatur Georgia, collects and refurbishes used eyeglasses to send on mission trips around the world. We send out more than 10,000 glasses a year. Let me know if your group is interested in providing glasses on a mission trip that you go on. We have glasses of all types: Prescription, Non-prescription, Bifocal, Sun glasses, Rx- Sunglasses and cases. If you don’t take an optometrist with you, the people can simply pick through the glasses to find what suites their vision needs.
We can mail the glasses to you before you leave the United States. Everything is free of charge.
It would also be great if you sponsor churches or groups overseas to send those glasses.
I am in my office Monday thru Friday. Let me know if you are interested in receiving glasses and working with us on this project. It is a great feeling to help someone to see again.

Reading and Sunglasses

We provide new readers and sunglasses to groups going to, or with clinics in, developing countries. We've been doing this since 2003 and have sent over 2M pairs with over 750 groups. We’d love to work with the Fellowship of Christian Optometrists. Certainly your group needs no introduction to the need for reading and sunglasses in developing countries. Please check out our website at www.restoringvision.org.
